Environmental pollution by large steelworks: EU law may require suspension of operation

In the Ilva case, the CJEU dealt with the serious environmental pollution caused by the Ilva steelworks, Europe's largest iron and steel works located in Italy, which had previously also be at the centre of proceedings before the European Court of Human Rights in the Cordella case (2019), regarding the health of the residents of the polluted area.
It seems clear that the ultimate goal of both rulings is the immediate reduction of the impugned emissions to a level which is no longer harmful. Under EU law this may require the suspension of the operation of the steelworks.
